Prayers to Prepare You to Intercede
The following prayers are Scriptures adapted "vertically" to be prayed back to God. This pattern of worship, thanksgiving, confession and requesting will help prepare you to intercede for
[American politics]. Use these Scriptures to prepare your heart to pray.
I. Worship: Establish God's Sovereignty and Supremacy
O Lord, You reign over the nations and You rule in righteousness from Your holy throne.
--Psalm 47:8 God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne.
I praise you for the trustworthiness and truth of Your word and Your person, O God. You are faithful and holy and righteous in all Your ways.
--Psalm 33:4 For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.
O Lord, You are great and mighty and majestic in Your power and authority! You see and know all things and there is no limit to Your understanding-it is beyond my comprehension.
--Psalm 147:5 There they are, overwhelmed with dread, for God is present in the company of the righteous.
II. Thanksgiving: Gratitude for God's Wisdom and My Freedom
Thank You, Lord Jesus Christ, for the freedom I have because You have set me free from my sins!
--John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
O Lord, I thank you for the spiritual freedom I enjoy because You are present in my life.
--II Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
All praise to You, O Triune God, for rescuing me from the Evil One. You have brought me into the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, the Son, and you bought my freedom with His precious blood. Thank you for the priceless gift of the forgiveness of my sins.
--Colossians 1:13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,
III. Confession: Agreeing with God About Sin
O God, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. It is useless to try to hide my sin, because nothing is hidden from Your eyes. I confess my sins to you, thanking you for removing my guilt with Your forgiveness.
--Psalm 32:5 Then I acknowledge my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, :I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”--and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
O Lord, help me to be as ready to forgive others for the wrongs they have done to me as I am eager for You to forgive me and take away my sins.
--Matthew 6:12 Forgive us our debts as we have forgiven our debtors.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for your faithfulness and justice, for You have paid the debt of my sin. Cleanse me now and keep me so pure and clean that I no longer want to offend You with my thoughts, words or deeds.
--I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
IV. Requesting: Calling on God for Help
O God in Heaven, You are faithful and steady. Help me to remain faithful in all my commitments-especially in this commitment to pray for this fall's elections.
--Romans 12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
Prayer Points
A. Let Your will be done in [American politics]. Let everything on earth work together to bring about Your will and purposes.
--Psalm 33:11
B. Raise up godly leaders who love You and who love righteousness. Give us elected officials at every level who can be counted on to do what is right in Your eyes, honoring you and shunning sin.
--II Samuel 23:3-4
C. Awaken our nation to the need for godly leaders. Make us a country of people hungry and thirsty for righteous leaders.
--Proverbs 25:5, Proverbs 29:2
D. Give discernment and wisdom to the electorate. Grant to our electorate the ability to see those leaders whose actions are in accord with Your values and laws.
--Proverbs 3:21
E. Spur the hearts of all Americans to invest their time, energy and interest in
[American politics]. Cause them to dismiss the negative and seek Your will as they consider candidates and issues.
--Philippians 2:14-15
F. Protect our nation from harm and calamity throughout the campaigns, the conventions of both parties and Election Day. Protect the candidates, their team members and the delegates to their conventions. Foil the plans of anyone intending to bring harm or damage to them. Guard and preserve our system of government.
--Psalm 32:7
G. Guide the members of the media into wisdom and truth. Protect them from the temptation to stretch or distort the truth, to add hype or spin. Give us sources for our election-related decisions that are trustworthy and honorable.
--Proverbs 12:22
H. Build into the very fabric of our nation a sense of the privilege and responsibility of our citizenship. Grant each American of voting age an acute awareness of the value of his or her vote. Let no one feel unneeded, unnecessary or above the process of the elections. Cause unprecedented numbers to vote in this election, honoring You and doing Your will.
--Amos 6:1
I. Grant that the election officials, machinery, balloting equipment, and all persons involved in overseeing the elections will work flawlessly resulting in accurate and fair results.

J. Bless the efforts of the Pray the VoteTM initiative that great numbers of people will commit to pray and will faithfully follow through on their commitment. Bring to mind the need for prayer and spread the word about all the prayer efforts for this fall's
Prayer for a President
After God’s Own Heart
Almighty God,
Your Word tells us, "The eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His." You see past our appearance, our education, our occupation, our experience, and You see into our hearts. And those whose hearts are completely Yours find uncommon strength from You.
Lord, as we enter into the upcoming presidential election, we ask that You would give us a president who is a man after Your own heart.
Give us a president who will shepherd us with integrity and truth. May he be a man of conviction who is more concerned about doing what is right than he is about securing a high approval rating.
Guide us to the candidate who is able to maintain a semblance of innocence in the midst of what is often a jaded political process. Although no one is perfect, show us which candidate has been tainted the least and who desires what is best for all Americans.
Please lead us to a man who not only has deep seated morals but is grounded in a relationship with You. May he seek direction from Your Word and from godly advisors. May he be a man of prayer who doesn't usurp Your authority but understands that he is answerable to You. And may he be a man courageous enough to walk in obedience to what You have required of Him.
Equip our president with the skill to lead the American people with knowledge and understanding. Give Him the wisdom to know how to bring the American people along with him as He follows after You.
Lord God, You are the one who sets up kings and deposes them. You are the one who gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. On November 2, open the eyes of the American voters so we will see past the appearances and into the heart. Through our president, may You turn our hearts toward you.
